The "Tour de Berlin - International Youngsters Race" completed its final stage on the Berlin boulevard in Karl-Marx-Allee near Alexanderplatz on Sunday, August 21, 2022.

 

For decades, Karl-Marx-Allee was the venue for the start of the opening stages and finish of the final stages of the International Peace Ride. Cycling has now returned to the historic site in 2022 with the Tour de Berlin. After the stages on the first two days on Tempelhofer Feld and at the Olympic Stadium, the final distribution of the classification jerseys took place in front of the Kino International, just like in the grand Tour de France or the current Vuelta a Espana.

It is also a new start for the name "Tour de Berlin", as this race for amateurs was THE cycling event in walled West Berlin for many years and, after 1990, a World Cup race in the U23 category. It is one of the few stage races in cycling that was or is only held IN a major city.

Bringing cycling races back to the city centre, even outside of the mega event "VeloCity Berlin", is thanks to the initiative of a new generation in the organization of cycling in Berlin, who are now supporting BRV President Claudiu Ciurea. They have experience in professional cycling, such as the Olympic champion and new state coach for young cyclists Petra Rossner or former Sixdays pro Andreas Müller, or are even still active themselves, such as track sprint ace Robert Förstemann.

Together, new concepts are being developed to make cycling in Berlin modern and attractive for both athletes and spectators. Further support comes from prominent athletes such as Olympic champion Kristina Vogel and former professional cyclist Jens Voigt, who have taken on the patronage of the stages of the 2022 Berlin stage race. Berlin's LSB President Thomas Härtel was also very impressed by the new momentum in Berlin's cycling scene during a flying visit.

The Berlin Cycling Federation has high hopes that the new Tour de Berlin, this year reserved for young riders only, will become the nucleus for many new racing ideas, including in other cycling disciplines.

However, the next cycling highlight in Berlin is just around the corner. On September 10, 2022, the third round of the UCI Cycling World Cup will take place in Berlin! Ten international teams from Switzerland, Austria, France, the Czech Republic and Germany will be competing, including the reigning world champions Bernd and Gerhard Mlady from Germany.
