The Heuer LongDistance SelfSupported 2023 started on time with the Opening Party on 13.05.2023 in cool and dry weather.

Willi and Rene explained to the participants the challenges that had to be completed along the way, then helped to activate the tracking via SpotWalla ... the race had the chance to take place.

There was plenty of pasta and sugary drinks before the start. Freshly fortified, three groups set off for Vienna at 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Route description

The route, which is suitable for road and gravel bikes, starts in Aichwald at the Heuer Radsport site and leads down into the Rems Valley through Schorndorf, Schwäbisch Gmünd and up to the Alb. Many of our participants are still familiar with this route and continues along the Danube to Donauwörth, through picturesque landscapes, green meadows and wooded slopes. On the way, they pass charming villages and small towns such as Neuburg an der Donau. Some spend the night in Ingolstadt, a historic city with an impressive old town. From Ingolstadt, the journey heads east along the Danube. Our suggested route takes you almost exclusively over asphalted paths along beautiful natural landscapes with impressive rock formations and rolling hills. On the other bank of the Danube there are often paved stretches with passages that are easier to master on gravel bikes. We pass idyllic places such as Kelheim and Weltenburg Abbey, Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage city with a well-preserved medieval old town. We continue along the Danube cycle path through Bavaria, passing towns such as Straubing, Deggendorf and Vilshofen. The route from Passau to Linz offers varied landscapes, picturesque vineyards and dense forests. From Linz via Grein and Krems to Tulln. There we met up for the last stage to Vienna. We rode the last 40 km together at a leisurely pace to the Prater.

The destination is Vienna, 5 p.m. at the Prater for a group photo. First of all: all groups arrived in Vienna on Saturday in good health and celebrated their achievement.

The average daily stages of the participants were probably between 120 and 140 km. The longest stages of the participants were counted as part of our challenge, almost all of them had ± 200 km as the longest stage on the counter.
Rene and Robin completed the entire route of 757 km in 27 hours in one go, respect for that ... they probably didn't see much of this wonderful tour.

All the adventures and great experiences we were able to gather would fill an entire book. To summarize, we can say that the positive feedback, the community and the great encounters motivate us to offer the event again next year as HLD 2024.

However, we are hoping for a tailwind in 2024.
